Our Children Challenged Us, We Succeeded
Just a few months ago we learned the government grant that provided funding for the weekend backpack program had been stopped. For years, Cayce UMC members had packed food in bags for 40 kids from Davis Early Childhood Center for Technology. No grant meant no weekend meals for these children. The task of carrying on the ministry seemed insurmountable. How could this church raise nearly $10,000 for the school year to pay for the food? It looked as if this vital ministry would dry up.
But then, the children of our congregation challenged us. Could we raise enough to buy food for the semester? The children raised quarters and looked to us to help. The children’s ministry sponsored a car wash in September to kickoff our fundraising attempts; the second century offering in October helped; in November, the UMW hosted a soup and cornbread luncheon with a silent offering. Enough money was raised to feed the 40 Davis children for this semester.
However, your generosity did not stop with paying for this semester. As of this moment, we have almost 100% of the funding in place to feed 40 children in the Backpack Ministry with Davis Elementary for the rest of the 2013-14 school year. Mission accomplished, Cayce United Methodist Church! You have done very, very well! I thank you for your generosity and passion for mission.
This centennial has been a blessed year. We have seen how God can equip us for the future by making God’s love known in the world—and at Davis Early Childhood Center for Technology.
